SAProxy — Best Freeware Spam Filtering Tool
SA Proxy (Spam Assassin Proxy) is a free anti-spam filter for any Microsoft Windows POP3 e-mail client (Outlook Express, Outlook, Eudora, etc.), but it will not work with web-based email (such as Hotmail), IMAP, Microsoft Exchange, Lotus Notes, etc. It is based on the open source software, Spam Assassin and uses online databases DCC and Razor. It runs as a local proxy server that sits between your email program and your POP3 mail account.
It can:
- study the message and check whether it matches patterns common for spam;
- contact online “blacklists” (DNSBL) to verify whether the message has arrived from a known spam source;
- contact online databases DCC and Razor (Cloudmark) which collect the “fingerprints” of millions of known spam messages;
- automatically learn how to tell spam from non-spam (statistical analysis);
automatically whitelist frequent senders; - easily configure basic settings with the help of a user-friendly interface;
- support custom rules (although that would require reading SpamAssassin documentation).Â
All you need to do is start SAProxy and configure your email program to connect to it instead of the normal incoming mail server (documentation shows how to do it). The next time you check your email, all spam messages will be tagged with ****SPAM**** in the subject line, allowing you to easily recognize them, or to create a rule in your email program that will move those tagged messages into a separate folder. Spam Assassin uses Bayesian filtering which is highly accurate and can learn from new spam as it is detected. The program does not delete any spam, but only marks it, leaving it up to you what to do with it.
